Pre-Operative Instructions

Undergoing a periodontal procedure requires careful preparation to ensure the best possible outcome and smooth recovery. At Toronto North Periodontics, we are committed to providing our patients with clear pre-operative instructions to minimize risks, prevent complications, and promote healing.

Following these pre-operative guidelines will help ensure your surgery is safe and successful. If you have any questions or concerns before your procedure, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at (647) 925-5925.

1. Antibiotics: What You Need to Know

If you have been prescribed pre-operative antibiotics, please take them exactly as directed before your surgery. Antibiotics are often given to help prevent infections, particularly in patients with certain medical conditions or undergoing extensive procedures.

Take antibiotics with food to reduce the risk of nausea.
For women on birth control pills, be aware that antibiotics may reduce their effectiveness. Consider alternative contraception methods during this period.
If you are allergic to antibiotics, this will be reviewed during your initial exam. If you are unsure about an allergy (e.g., Penicillin), we may recommend that your physician refer you to an Allergist for testing.

🚨 If you experience any allergic reaction or sensitivity after taking your prescribed antibiotics (such as rash, swelling, difficulty breathing, or dizziness), contact our office immediately at (416) 222-5055.

2. Avoid Certain Herbal Supplements

Certain herbal supplements can increase the risk of bleeding and should be avoided starting 10 days before your surgery. These include:

  • Gingko biloba
  • Garlic (in high doses)
  • Ginseng
  • Dong quai
  • Feverfew

If you take any of these supplements regularly, please discontinue use at least 10 days before surgery to minimize bleeding complications.

3. Blood Thinners and Anticoagulants

If you are taking anticoagulant medications (blood thinners) such as:

  • Aspirin
  • Plavix
  • Pradaxa
  • Xarelto

Your periodontist will evaluate your case and determine whether a temporary pause (drug holiday) is necessary before surgery. This decision will be made in consultation with your physician, ensuring that the benefits of pausing the medication outweigh the risks.

Do not stop taking any prescribed medications without first consulting your doctor and periodontist.

4. Prepping for a Soft Diet: What to Eat After Surgery

A successful recovery after your periodontal procedure requires proper nutrition, with a focus on soft, easy-to-chew foods that promote healing. Preparing in advance will help you manage your post-operative diet without stress.

We recommend having the following soft foods on hand:

Meal Replacement Options

  • Ensure® or Boost® – These meal replacements help ensure you meet your daily nutrient requirements, especially if you have difficulty eating solid foods.

Fruits & Vegetables

  • Soft fruits (bananas, ripe avocados, cooked apples)
  • Well-cooked vegetables (carrots, zucchini, spinach, mashed cauliflower)
  • Apple sauce

Protein-Rich Foods

  • Tender meat, poultry, or fish (cooked until soft enough to cut with a fork)
  • Cottage cheese
  • Eggs (scrambled, poached, or soft-boiled)

Comforting & Easy-to-Eat Foods

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Oatmeal
  • Soups (broth-based or blended creamy soups)
  • Yogurt & pudding
  • Smoothies (made with soft fruits, yogurt, or protein powder)
  • Rice & pasta

Avoid crunchy, hard, or spicy foods that could irritate the surgical site.

5. Additional Pre-Surgery Tips

Wear comfortable clothing on the day of your surgery.
Arrange for transportation if you are receiving sedation or general anesthesia. You should not drive yourself home.
Avoid smoking & alcohol for at least 24 hours before surgery, as these can slow healing and increase the risk of complications.
Get a good night’s sleep before your procedure to help your body prepare for recovery.
